Nature-based solutions (NBS) can stimulate economic growth, deliver social equity and help mitigate and adapt to climate change. However, finance is key.
This session forges dialogue between corporates, basin practitioners and investors. Examples of financing mechanisms demonstrate challenges and opportunities regarding collective action, identifying and investing in bankable projects and measuring benefits.
Investing in nature-based solutions (NBS) and transforming landscapes where corporates are operating lead to multiple benefits. Those include addressing water risks and increasing local water security, improving agricultural productivity, adapting to climate change, decarbonisation and sequestration of emissions for any corporate net-zero claims. Thus, recognising, valuing and investing in natural infrastructure enables sustainable green growth. Moreover, working with nature can also optimise the performance and financial benefits of built infrastructure.
Decision-makers design interventions by understanding the business case of natural and built infrastructure. This includes analysing costs and benefits (economic, ecological, engineering and social), trade-offs and climate change scenarios. However, for further scaled investments there is a gap when it comes to delivering NBS at scale and achieving proof-of-concept.
This showcase provides compelling examples of existing financing mechanisms. To initiate the debate, a lighting round of questions will be answered by each member, focused on prioritising what is needed to achieve NBS investments at scale. Examples of corporate supply chain funds or the DCFD will provide insights of challenges and opportunities regarding collective action, identifying bankable NBS projects, measuring benefits and implementing NBS. A facilitated discussion will lead to the identification of key actions and priorities to scale investments.
