South Pole at COP29

As countries, companies, and civil society gather in Baku for COP29, the focus will be on advancing collective efforts to meet the 1.5°C target, and South Pole's carbon market and climate policy experts will be present on the ground.

What can we expect from COP29?

The global community reached a pivotal agreement at COP28 to transition away from fossil fuels by 2050, marking the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. This year, all eyes are on countries to continue to make good on this pledge:

Focus on climate financing

Dubbed the 'finance COP', discussions will focus on boosting financial commitments to support developing nations' climate efforts, particularly through the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). Countries are expected to enhance pledges for the NCQG in 2024, offering crucial support for vulnerable states tackling the impacts of climate change.

Pushing the implementation of the Paris Agreement

The culmination of the 'Global Stocktake' will be the basis for stronger national climate action plans, due in 2025, and for countries to set targets for 2035/2040. Expect in-depth dialogues on how countries plan to meet the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and enhance ambition to limit global warming, while emphasizing transparency, and accountability.

Accelerating Article 6

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, fosters collaboration among countries seeking cost-effective emission reductions through Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), which count toward their national climate plans (NDCs).

  • Article 6.2, which governs the transfer and accounting of carbon assets generated in one country for use towards the NDC of another, is already operational. However, COP29 offers a chance to confirm consensus around a quick operationalisation. This will impact its helpfulness in scaling climate action quickly.
  • Article 6.4, the new UN crediting scheme, is not yet operational. South Pole hopes to see the methodological guidance for 6.4 approved in Baku, allowing the UN to implement and effect the scheme.

Join us at COP29

South Pole's carbon market and climate policy experts will be present on the ground, hosting and joining important discussions to help translate commitments into meaningful action and progress – fast.
