Decarbonising fashion is now more than ever the only strategic choice for the sector. Generating 2-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the fashion industry needs a step change in climate action. If the sector keeps growing following a business-as-usual model, projections estimate emissions will grow to 1,500 Gt by 2030 – an unsustainable trend which risks hindering our efforts to achieve the Paris Agreement climate objectives.
Sector-wide actions such as the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action and the Fashion Pact are commendable and much needed initiatives to unite fashion stakeholders towards a greener future but progress is too slow. With complex and often geographically dispersed supply chains, fashion has a tremendous potential for change – a potential that needs to be channelled into a tangible roadmap for ambitious climate action.
Key step for climate action is a robust climate strategy. Carbonsink, with South Pole the world's largest climate solution provider and carbon project developer, has developed a roadmap guiding businesses along their sustainability journey:
Several actions exists that are implementable today across the entire supply chain from sourcing (e.g., investing in more sustainable sourcing practices and materials), to production (e.g., maximising material efficiency and design, new generation materials, recycling and upcycling materials) and logistics (e.g., switching to 100% renewable energy).
Fashion's potential impact is huge. Engaging with and involving supply chain actors, investors and consumers, and aligning them to the industry's sustainability journey will trigger real change for the sector, society and the environment, today and in the medium to long term.
