The Global Climate Action Summit has partnered with sustainability solutions provider South Pole to meet and exceed the gold standard of sustainability for the landmark event on 12-14 September in San Francisco.
Reducing the environmental impact of the event-related activities is achieved through the Summit's dedicated Sustainability Roadmap, which ties each area of action back to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Change Agreement. South Pole will ensure that the Summit organisers, the UN Foundation and the state of California, successfully manage the Summit's operational footprint by auditing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to the planning and production of the event.
The Summit comes ahead of a global 'stock-taking' of progress on the Paris Agreement, and at a time when stronger commitments on climate action are urgently required. Its primary aim is to bring together cities, companies, and states to prompt national governments to commit to more ambitious emissions reduction initiatives by 2020.
San Francisco will also play host to several other notable events and exhibitions running in parallel with the Summit. Together, this collection of events will seek to inspire private and public sector champions to take action, manage unavoidable climate risks, and maximise low-carbon opportunities in five key challenge areas: healthy energy systems, inclusive economic growth, sustainable communities, land and ocean stewardship, and transformative climate investments.
Jeff Swartz, Director Carbon Markets and Climate Policy, South Pole, says: “The latest IPCC reports show us governments and the private sector must take greater action towards delivering the below 2-degrees Paris target. The Global Climate Action Summit is an important moment to reflect and gather ideas on how we can accelerate the goals set in the Paris Agreement. We're proud to be supporting the Summit's mission and empowering the climate change community - within and beyond the United States."
