South Pole expands market-leading advisory services with the launch of Luumo

South Pole's extensive suite of advisory services has further expanded with the launch of Luumo, a digital climate platform fully integrated with South Pole's existing decarbonisation offering.

South Pole's advisory experts have helped over one thousand companies working towards decarbonising their operations and entire value chain to achieve their climate ambitions. Luumo now offers clients an easy-to-use digital platform to measure, track and reduce carbon emissions –including those deep in supply chains – visualise carbon hotspots in new ways and monitor progress on their climate journey.

Data-led foundations for climate strategies

It is clear that businesses need a solid foundation and flow of data to inform their decisions and track progress against short and long term climate targets. Incoming regulations in the United States, the EU and across Asia clearly demonstrate that companies, big and small, will soon be required to disclose the carbon intensity of their activities. Disclosure will effectively distinguish between companies making progress towards net zero targets, those with pledges on paper only and companies with no plan at all.

Luumo plugs directly into South Pole's wide reaching climate advisory offering, simplifying some of the complex challenges of implementing the net zero transition with a user-friendly platform that integrates seamlessly with various data sources.

The platform allows businesses to: calculate and visualise their carbon footprint in real-time; gain actionable insights into emission hotspots across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (direct, indirect energy, and value chain emissions); and make data-driven decisions to reduce their environmental impact build business resilience. Luumo will support current and new South Pole clients to measure their carbon footprints, identify emissions hotspots and provide a data-led foundation for developing and executing climate strategies.

"Luumo empowers businesses to take charge of their climate action journey, because you simply can't fix what you can't measure and track," said Theo Petropoulos, South Pole's Head of Digital Climate Solutions. "Our new platform gives back control to our customers and greatly reduces the inconsistencies associated with traditional carbon data management. This allows companies to focus quickly on what matters most – reducing their emissions and building a sustainable future by setting targets, understanding their risks and opportunities and getting ready for regulatory reporting."

Franziska Sinner, South Pole's Global Head of Advisory added that, "we are focused on making it easier for existing and new clients to make the rapid and deep emissions reductions required if we are to reach the targets laid out in the Paris Agreement. Luumo helps companies view the source and scale of their carbon emissions in a new way by breaking down and visualising complex data. Working side by side with our teams, we can then create clearly understandable climate strategies that reinforce the need for speed and scale in the fight for a stable climate."

Breaking down complexity of the net zero transition

Luumo tackles key challenges for businesses seeking to decarbonise, including:

  • GHG emissions accounting is time intensive, needs to be completed annually and can become complex if methodologies or company employees leading this work change. Luumo automates much of this process providing a clear, long-term picture of a company's emissions profile.
  • Setting climate targets & strategy involves extensive consultations and large data sets. Luumo provides clarity through data that allows companies to set credible science-based targets.
  • Climate Risks are becoming urgent for companies to address. The climate risk module on Luumo provides clients with Taskforce for Climate Related Disclosures (TCFD) aligned results on how physical and transition climate risks could affect their business. It helps them to quickly identify risk hotspots, build business resilience and meet their reporting requirements.
  • Gaps in CSRD reporting are hard for companies to identify and address. Luumo provides clarity on current sustainability reporting, giving companies in the EU greater certainty on where they stand regarding complying with the CSRD regulations. In addition, Luumo provides recommendations on which improvements to prioritise.

The platform is already tested by different companies, as part of the pilot program, including Scott, Tecan and Proximus.

Commenting on Luumo, Laurent Crucifix, Sustainability Manager at Proximus, said: "The tool facilitates collaborative interactions to overcome the challenge to efficiently deliver corporate GHG accounting."

"By using this software solution for carbon accounting, I am better able to work on implementing a decarbonisation strategy according to the data", said Andrew Goodman, CSR/Sustainability Manager at Scott Sports.

Understanding and breaking down the complex steps along the transition to net zero will allow companies to move further, faster in the race to net zero. Luumo is the next step in automating and visualising companies' climate data, driving forward the deep emissions reductions required to reduce the impacts of climate change.
