South Pole helps Toll Group, Nike & Stockland achieve first NCOS-certified carbon neutral building

Toll Group's custom-built Nike warehouse in Melbourne's Altona North has become the first building in Australia to be certified carbon neutral against the Federal Government's National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS)(now Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard) using the GreenStar pathway.
Toll and Nike achieved this by retrofitting the building with high-efficiency LED lights that halved its electricity consumption. Remaining emissions were offset with sustainability solutions provider,
South Pole, through two high-quality emission reduction projects: the Tasmanian Native Forest Protection project, and Nakhon Biogas, an energy recovery project at a cassava starch factory in Thailand.
Owned by Stockland property group, the 18,000 sqm Toll-Nike logistics facility also has a Green Star Performance rating and was named 'Best Industrial Project' at the 2017 National Energy Efficiency Awards.
Chris Pearce, Global Logistics President, Toll Group, commented on the milestone achievement for Nike, Toll and Stockland, "[The NCOS certification] demonstrates our collective commitment to reducing environmental impacts and introducing smarter, more sustainable solutions across our operations."
According to
South Pole's Senior Carbon and Energy Manager - Australia, Jay van Rijn, the achievement sets a new benchmark in sustainability for Australian businesses.

South Pole recently
added carbon neutral certification against the NCOS to its own Australian operations, which are also climate neutral according to the sustainability solutions company's own PAS 2060-aligned standards.
Managed by the Department of the Environment and Energy, the
National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) is the Australian Government's voluntary carbon offsetting program, which is available to organisations, buildings, precincts and events looking to manage their greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.
