Alto de Ventanas Habitat Bank

Protecting biodiversity in the Northern Central Andes of Colombia

Colombia
Alto de Ventanas Habitat Bank

In the heart of the Central Andes of Colombia, lies a sanctuary for endangered and endemic species. Alto de Ventanas, situated in the northern region of Antioquia, is a crucial area for protecting and restoring populations of threatened species. The Habitat Bank provides an efficient mechanism for voluntary nature investments, and for businesses needing to compensate for residual environmental impacts; contributing to the conservation of the incredible diversity of wildlife that inhabits the region.

The Solution

The project aims to restore 168 hectares of Andean ecosystems by planting native trees and shrubs, and managing natural regeneration. The goal is to improve the quality and complexity of the vegetation cover, which hopes to create  better habitat for unique and threatened species, and contribute to carbon sequestration efforts. In the Alto de Ventanas project, South Pole partners with the Colombian NGO Salvamontes, whose members are acknowledged experts within the scientific community. The implementation of the project will actively rely on  engaging local communities and incorporating their knowledge into the project’s design and development.

The Impact

In addition to its restoration efforts within this biodiversity hotspot, the Alto de Ventanas Habitat Bank project aims to help reduce soil erosion, improve infiltration, and regulate water flow; all of which hope to enhance water management, thereby benefiting both local communities and the overall health of the ecosystem. From a socio-economic standpoint, the project envisions to strengthen and develop local capacities for the propagation and planting of native species, thus supporting the local economy and creating employment opportunities. The project also aims to preserve, maintain, and transmit the ecological knowledge of the communities across generations. The success and long-term sustainability of initiatives as such are deeply rooted in local experience, expertise, and local knowledge.

Nature-specific benefits

  • Reduced risk of deforestation and biodiversity loss by lessening the impact of human activities on ecosystems and natural resources.
  • Enhanced ecological connectivity that supports conservation corridors established by the regional environmental authority.
  • Enhanced water regulation through the protection and restoration of forest cover.
  • Protection of unique and endangered biodiversity within the Cloud Forest ecosystem.
  • Efficient conservation mechanisms that focus on the region's conservation priorities and ecological significance.
