Article 6 establishes a new framework for international cooperation between countries to reduce emissions. It creates the rules that govern how Article 6 credits - known as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) - are accounted for and transferred.
What makes an ITMO different to other carbon credits is that it must be authorised by the country it was created in, declaring that the GHG emission reductions or removals certified through the carbon credit will not be counted towards its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
Because the ITMO is not counted toward the host country's NDC, it can be purchased by other countries to help meet their NDCs. ITMOs can also be purchased by companies seeking to meet voluntary or mandatory targets and airlines seeking to meet their obligations under CORSIA.
