"We are very excited to work together with Adyen, tapping into South Pole's carbon and sustainability expertise and Adyen's technical expertise to accelerate climate action along with its merchants" says Maaike Schoonejans, Sustainability Advisor. "With this project we give customers the opportunity to take responsibility and compensate for the climate impact of their purchase."
Last week, Adyen announced Planet, allowing merchants using the company's payment platform to offer shoppers the option to offset the carbon footprint of their purchases at the end of the checkout process.
To offer its merchants a click-of-a-switch sustainability solution, Adyen worked with South Pole to build an emission calculator that determines the amount of greenhouse gas emissions related to the production and delivery of purchased goods. Shoppers can then choose to offset these emissions by supporting third-party certified reforestation and renewable energy climate projects developed by South Pole.
"Taking responsibility for our environmental footprint is part of our license to operate in today's society. To go further than that we built Planet, a feature that leverages our technology to help our merchants support environmental sustainability projects," said Ingo Uytdehaage, CFO of Adyen. "By joining forces with our merchants, we can generate positive environmental impact at scale."
One of the first merchants to activate Planet is Kazidomi, an online supermarket chain. A certified B-Corp, Kazidomi has decided to offer this option to their customers as part of their efforts to accelerate the transition to more sustainable consumption patterns in an innovative way.
Thanks to this partnership, Adyen's merchants like Kazidomi and their customers know that their good intentions can go to support needed projects grounded by robust methodologies and South Pole's depth of expertise, while compensating for their footprint is as easy as a single click.
