CapaCITIES to help improve waste management practices in India

Coimbatore Corporation on Friday began assessing the quantity of waste dumped in Vellalore, in the Coimbatore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, in order to start the exercise of quantifying waste.

With the final data, CapaCITIES, an organisation working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and coping with climate change, would prepare a detailed plan for the corporation to improve waste management practices.

Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation said that the move was part of the efforts to improve waste management in Vellalore and address the issues flagged by the National Green Tribunal's Southern Bench on the topic. The corporation had undertaken a similar waste mapping exercise a few months back, which revealed that 15.50 cubic metres of waste had been dumped. The current exercise was to confirm the quantity and suggest methods of reducing further waste management. As a first step to improve the waste collection exercise, the corporation has planned to build exclusive organic waste collection centres and dry waste resources centres in Vellalore. It has also planned to buy 600 push carts and a few hundred more bins to streamline collection efforts. In addition to the aforementioned activities, the corporation has also planned to document its collection and handling exercise in video format, as suggested by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
