South Pole has joined a group of over 70 public and private organisations as an official supporter of the Germany Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development's new "Alliance for Development and Climate" (Allianz für Entwicklung und Klima).
Announced by Federal Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller in the German national parliament on 29 November, the alliance combines climate protection and sustainable development. It does so by focussing on CO2 avoidance, reduction and compensations through measures additional to existing emission reduction commitments (such as the Paris Agreement and the European Emissions Trading Scheme).
Such measures include privately financed climate change mitigation projects that effectively complement public climate and development financing.
" Strong participation by the private sector in implementing the targets agreed under the Paris Agreement and the SDGs is absolutely crucial. South Pole welcomes this call for action by the German government and looks forward to cooperate with the Alliance in mobilising voluntary contributions by the private sector in Germany." says Patrick Bürgi, Director Public Sector and Co-Founder at South Pole.
